Snowballs in the Summer

| Hydrangeas were once ruled to be a disappointing shrub by most homeowners who never saw theirs bloom. I was constantly asked “Why won’t my Hydrangea Bloom”? Different varieties of the large leaf or Macrophylla Hydrangea were the source of these complaints. | Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Twist n Shout’-The first re-blooming lacecap Hydrangea out of the Endless Summer Series. It blooms on old and new wood. Flower color is pink in our soil, but adding aluminum sulphate will change the color to a periwinkle blue. Excellent addition to the landscape, providing unique flowers thru the summer. | Hydrangea quercifolia “Oakleaf Hydrangea” This is probably the best shrub to plant in the shade. It will grow well in the sun, but thrives in the deep shade. Large white flowers appear in mid June and last well into August. The flowers fade to pink as they finish, making them attractive well past their prime. The large Oak shaped leaves produce a spectacular fall color. It has exfoliating bark that creates interest in the winter. | ![]() |

| Hydrangea anomala petiolaris - Climbing Hydrangeas are spectacular specimen vines. They bloom in full sun to part shade but will still grow well in shade. Their blooms are pure white and fragrant. The foliage is an attractive dark, glossy green. These are bug and disease resistant. Climbing hydrangeas work particularly well against brick and stone houses or on an arbor or trellis. | ![]() |
