Let’s add some All-American Color
The older I get, the more I appreciate our freedoms. Not perfect at times, nothing in life is. If you tend to agree, a little more Red, White, and Blue to your outdoor living environment might be appropriate. The following are two great families of summer blooming plants that have all the necessary colors in its family to match our flag plus you can use a couple colors of one and the third color from the other. Both of these families bloom all summer into fall.

Hibiscus-Rose of Sharon A tough adaptable shrub or small tree that flowers in mid summer. Numerous cultivars provide a variety of colors in double or single blooms. Adaptable to numerous conditions, but does not tolerate extreme moisture. Can reach 8-12’ height and 6-10’ width at maturity. Trim to desired size in the spring.

“Lavender Chiffon” Single, Lavender flowers. PW

“Rose Satin” Deep rose pink with a red center. PW

“White Chiffon” Pure white flowers with a lacy center. PW

“Blue Satin” Single, royal blue flowers PW.

“Peony Florus Tree” Double pink flowers on standard.

Also available in standard/tree form in assorted colors.

Butterfly Bush Tips

-Trim the shrub back far each spring (mid march) if you want to keep the shrub compact.

-It will flower best when planted in the full sun, but will tolerate moderate shade.

-Use in mass plantings, in perennial gardens, and to attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
