Selecting Soil to Use can be Somewhat Confusing

Spring is here and some marketing people are in full swing. Go to the box stores, supermarkets, hardware stores, and even some well known garden centers and you’ll be bombarded with all types of bagged soil-type products to assist you and your new plants get off to a good start. Here are some choices and remarks:

Planting Soil:

It is to be used to plant new trees and shrubs instead of that old heavy clay soil. STOP! You always return the soil you dug up to make the hole. That’s the type of soil through out your yard. To replace that soil with the loose bagged material will cause a situation referred to as bathtub planting, causing the root clumps of any installed plant to collect water and drown. This will also cause the new annuals and perennials to face the same fate

If you want to lightly amend your clay soil, the best additive (soil amendment) is small pine bark chips using no more than 20% by volume.

Soilless potting soil is the medium of choice for any container planting. This is the type of soil that all the annuals and perennials are started and grown in. Soilless potting soil never has to be replaced. You can use the same soil year after year. Soilless potting mix is sterile, meaning you have to supply the fertilizer following the instructions on the container.

Any questions? Give us a call. Don’t guess as you could be very wrong and pay the high price of failure.
