Denny’s Tips of the Week

1. You’ll be tempted to put more fertilizer on your lawn. The only thing that will accomplish is a weaker lawn. Yes, it might make your grass greener but that will come at the expense of your grass roots – hold off till fall.

2. Self watering patio pots and hanging baskets should not be used outdoors. There is no way to control rain fall and your drainless containers could stay way to wet. If you have a container that doesn’t drain, put several holes in the bottom of the container to allow that plant to drain.

3. Try to contain yourself from buying any of the T.V. advertised gimmicks that you see more and more of. Upside down tomatoes can be any tomato variety that you plant in the bottom of a plastic hanging basket. Save lots of money and buy an empty 12” hanging basket. Cut a 3” hole in the bottom using a saber saw and use any soilless potting mix. The soil will not fall out the bottom. Go ahead and plant Basil or other Herbs in the top.

4. Be careful buying new flowers and veggies that are being displayed outside in the open air. They could have gotten chilled and overwatered with all that rain.

5. Don’t forget, you can plant new trees, shrubs and groundcover all summer. Remember, the best time to plant a tree was 25 years ago. The next best time is today or this summer. Click here to see New Trees introduced this year.
