I’ve recently written about some of the new trees and shrubs being introduced this year. It’s only fitting that I now introduce some of the new and newer products that will be available this spring. Some are brand new while others have been around a few years but perhaps they’ll be new to you. Let’s start with critter repellants and go from there.

| Deer Scram™ is an odorless granular deer repellant that will keep deer away from protected plants for 30 to 45 days depending on rainfall. Deer Stopper™ is a liquid spray that comes in a hand held pump sprayer and lasts on the treated plants for 30 days. Liquid Fence™ has added a dog and cat repellant that’s all natural. It trains your pet and others not to go to the bathroom in the treated areas. Ro-pel® Bulb Protector keeps chipmunks and mice away from your bulbs, just spray the bulbs before planting and your bulbs are safe. Intruder Reusable Rodentrap™ is a safe and reusable trap that you bait with peanut butter and quickly sends the chipmunks to heaven. Then there are these new and very environmentally friendly pesticides….. Bayer Tree and Shrub™ is an insect control that contains Merit, a very safe pesticide that you mix with water per instructions and pour around the roots of your plants protecting them from insects for up to one year. Sluggo™ this product kills snails and slugs and is very safe around pets and wildlife. It is also safe to put around fruits and vegetables. Pyrethrin is a pesticide that’s derived from mums; it’s very natural and effective against the labeled pests. Neem Oil is a fantastic horticultural oil that is effective as a fungicide and pesticide and is as safe to use as cooking oil. |

| Other products that will make your gardening chores go a lot easier: Turflon* Ester by Hi-Yield is a selective broadleaf weed control that also selectively kills Bermuda grass and nimblewill. Preen Organic™ is safe to use around vegetables. It contains corn gluten and controls weed seed for 4 to 6 weeks. Apply monthly spring thru summer. Dimension™ by Hi-Yield is a weed seed preventer that controls weed seed for 4 months in your landscape beds. Two applications keep the weeds away for the entire gardening season. Do not use around veggies. The label on the bag is Turf & Ornamental Weed and Grass Stopper containing Dimension™. Prodiamine™ by ferti-lome is a pre-emergent crabgrass control that keeps weed seed from germinating in your lawn up to 8 months. The label on the bag is “Lawn Food Plus Crabgrass and Weed Preventer. All of these products have one thing in common. They make gardening more fun but please, when using any product around your yard, always read the label and follow the instructions. Remember, more is never better. |
