Denny's Tips for the Week - 1/26/12

To begin this week’s newsletter, I want to start by saying how proud I am that I saw no one trying to knock last weekend’s ice off of any trees or shrubs. You’ve figured out that you could do a lot more damage to your plants by trying to knock the ice off of them. The ice was actually beneficial to some large shade trees that had small dead branches hanging on. The weight of the ice did knock those smaller twigs and branches to the ground saving you or someone else from having to do it.

Speaking of trees

I hate to be too repetitive but this is a great season to have a good, qualified, no Doctor’s attire type arborist to check all your large trees to make sure they’re structurally sound and over all healthy. A good qualified arborist can see the entire tree without being visually blocked by tree leaves. Please, don’t put it off. Feel secure in the knowledge that your trees are structurally sound.

My lawn tip for the week

Saturday, January 21st was a good example of when not to walk on your lawn. Remember, you can leave permanent foot prints (marks) when you walk on your lawn when blades are frozen. This same rule applies even if no ice is present, but just air temps below 25°. Please explain this to your newspaper delivery person.

It won’t be long!

Look in your rear view mirror next week and you’ll see the last of January 2012. February is quickly approaching and with it some time to start thinking spring. I want you to include in your thoughts a 3-Step Lawn Program for yourself, Professional advice on any landscape project that you are considering, educational opportunities available as in the Cincinnati Zoo Gardening Classes, Home and Garden Show, and seminars upcoming at your favorite Garden Center or Nursery Store. I know I’m anxious to see the final spring program of seminars that we will provide this spring beginning in March. A List of the classes will be available within a couple of weeks so you can register and guarantee yourself a seat that includes free breakfast.
