Denny's Tips for the Week

Special Valentine Day Edition

Who better to have on the Radio this Saturday (1160AM from 8am to 10am) than Carol Mundy who will begin making regular appearances on the 'Denny McKeown Gardening Show'. We will be talking about all the love in the air among our critters this time of year and have lots of fun and great info for all of you. Carol works for the Hamilton County Park Board and personally manages my favorite park, Glenwood Gardens, in Glendale/Woodlawn area. Tune in and bring any nature question with you to the phone.

The following info was furnished by Carol Mundy.

Cupid's effect on wildlife

Lots of courting going on in the wild during the month of February, Coyote, Mink, Skunk, Chipmunk, Voles, Bald Eagle, Fox, Mole, Muskrat (muskrat love...) Deer Mice, Beaver, Salamanders!

You could almost know it was courting time for skunks because of that wonderful perfume in the air. Male skunks are on the move to find a lady

skunk, they don't look both ways when crossing the street, and you know the rest of that story! Also male skunks often have territory disputes with one another during courtship and it is not uncommon for the loser to go home stinky (as well as the whole neighborhood where the dispute occurred)

Foxes are said to be "twitter pated" as they coo and yelp looking for love.

Salamander orgies occur (can you say that word on the radio??) anyway hundreds of salamander meet up at the local pond or wet spot when we have the warm rainy nights in February. You'll see hundreds of them writhing and wiggling at the water's edge all looking for the perfect mate - hey baby what's your sign?

Great Horned Owls are already on the nest (courtship occurred in December and January) so Valentine's Day for them means Mr. Owl brings Mrs. Owl a plumb rat for a romantic dinner while she is incubating eggs.

Bald Eagles chase each other and often have death defying, talon-locking encounters in mid-air.

By mid-February the male Woodcock (I'm not making this up) does a wild aerial dance and when he lands, he's hoping the female Woodcock was so impressed that she will be waiting there to start a family...

Ain't love grand? Happy Valentine’s Day

Winter grass seeding

Take advantage of our resect weather and winter seed your lawn. One great turf fescue mix I failed to mention last week is Execu-Turf™ a mix of 3 high rated turf fescue varieties. Remember, if you do winter seed, tell yourself or your lawn service that you have so you don’t apply any pre-emergent seed control until your new seed germinates and starts to grow.

Speaking of weeds, you’ve probably noticed many new ones showing up in various unwanted parts of your landscape. The only selective weed control you can use early in the season is Fertilome’s Weed Free Zone™. It is effective as long as temps are at least 40°. All others including Fertilome’s Weed-Out™ need temps of at least 65°
