Denny's Tips for the Week

Question: Lots of lawn weeds this spring? What’s the best way to eliminate them?

Answer: The absolutely best way is a thick lawn so weed seed gets no light to germinate, you know, our 3 Step Fertilome Lawn Program. The next best way is to use a liquid herbicide that’s selective and even gets the hard to kill ones. Weed Free Zone™ is the only one that fits those results. Last and probably the last thing you can use to try to attain good weed kill is any weed n’ feed. You have to apply this product to the entire lawn area, even where you have no weeds. With a liquid application, you can treat just the weeds and not the whole lawn. Weed N’ Feed dry products only control 20% of the weeds, even when applied properly. When the weeds die, if you need to re-seed those areas, you can’t put down grass seed for 30 to 45 days. With Weed Free Zone™ liquid you can reseed right away regardless of what the KY Florist says on his radio show.

There are lots of dead trees around. Homeowners are hiring tree removal companies that take down large trees and grind out the remaining stumps. Not every company does it correctly however. To grind up a stump properly the stump grinder should take the stump out to a depth of 18 inches. It will be hard for you to know if this was done properly. Untwist a coat hanger and straighten it out. Make sure you can push the hanger through the chips 18” before stopping. This is especially important if you are planting another tree in the same location. Have all the wood chips removed and replace with good top soil.
Where's my Dogwood Blooms?
When planting a young Dogwood regardless of family or variety, it needs a little patience from you when it comes to the Big Question "When will my Dogwood Bloom?" Nobody can predict or say. Trees, like people, all do their own thing. Your Dogwood tree will bloom when it wants to.
Let me remind you again - it is that important

This Week’s Big Labor Saving Tips - Maple trees, especially the Silver and Red varieties are in the process of dropping a record number of seeds (whirly birds) that will be dropping and landing in every part of your landscape. Even if you don't have a maple tree and your neighbor does, many of his will find their way to your yard. What's a fella to do?? If they land in your lawn and germinate, your lawn mower will mow them a couple of times and the mini-trees will die. Your planting beds and gardens are a different story. The seeds will start to

germinate in these areas and your lawn mower can't help. If you haven't already put down Dimension on your soil this spring, do so this weekend. Dimension will keep all those maple seeds along with other weed seeds present from germinating and kill all the unwanted seed from growing at all. Treat areas around your property where the ground is bare. It will help get the job done quickly if you use a small, hand held applicator.
