|For thousands of Midwest Gardeners, Denny McKeown is the man to ask about any lawn and garden problem. Denny McKeown is a respected, popular, and highly regarded gardening expert who has been in the nursery business for more than 51 years.
McKeown's love of gardening began at the age of five when the man hired to landscape his family's home let him participate as much as he could in the project. "I am truly blessed," says McKeown, "to be able to say that at age five I knew what I wanted to do as my life work."
McKeown attended Ohio State University and University of Cincinnati evening college but says his practical experience has been his true education. An uninspired scholar in high school, he was voted "Most Likely to Fail" by his graduating class - a slight his classmates sought to rectify when, at their 25th reunion, they presented him an award naming him "Most Improved." Among other professional and civic accomplishments, he produced the first Jaycees Haunted House, a fund raiser that has inspired hundreds of similar projects across the country, raising millions of dollars for charity.
Denny is married to Pat and he has two daughters, Molly and Jennifer, and a son, Christopher, who works with his dad. Denny has seven grandchildren.
Denny hosted a Saturday morning radio program from 1981 to 2012 on various local radio stations in the Cincinnati area. During this time the show was also broadcast into radio markets throughout the Midwest. For many years during this time Denny also produced weekly garden features for local news stations. All of this radio and television exposure made Denny a local celebrity known as “Cincinnati’s Garden Guru”.
Denny continues to write a weekly garden column for the Cincinnati Enquirer. He also produces a weekly email newsletter.
|Denny has also been involved with TV for over 24 years he provided weekly gardening tips on Channel 9 Saturday and Sundays on the 8 am to 9 am news.
In 1985 Denny published his first book "Denny McKeown's Complete Guide to Midwest Gardening" from Taylor Publishing Company. Since then Denny has written 5 more garden books all published by Cool Springs Press with one of the latest being the "Revised Ohio Gardening Book" released in 2005 and his newest "Month by Month Gardening in Ohio" which was released in January of 2006 and co-authored with Tom Smith.
|Denny has a weekly garden column in the Saturday Cincinnati Enquirer in the Home Section and a weekly newsletter with up to date garden info www.bloomingarden.com
|In the early 1990’s he started his own garden center and landscape company that he now operates with his son, Chris who he regards as the backbone of the company.
Denny is past National President of the Garden Centers of America.
He has learned over the years that his success depends solely on the success of the landscapes that belong to the customers he serves. His common sense, matter of fact approach to gardening focuses on low maintenance, high-performance, and high color plants and he wraps all that up with a unique sense of humor, he shares freely to all those he meets.
