Instant Gratification in a Disposable World by James "Woody" Wood (Vice President/Landscape Mgr)

| What happened to the good old days of buying long lasting, good quality products? Unfortunately, we have become a society of instant gratification in a disposable world. How many times have you made the cost of an item your main priority over the quality of the item, then ultimately having buyers remorse. This happens because we either are not happy with the quality of the inferior product or worse yet we end up having to replace it sooner than later ultimately costing us more money in the long run. So, how does all this relate to the landscaping world? A lot of new clients are those needing us to help fix things that should have never been “broken” in the first place. Many of their problems occurred long after the dust had settled, the warranty ran out & no one was around for follow up any issues. Keep in mind most landscaping should last 10-15 years if plants are placed in the proper location, with room for them to grow & if they receive proper maintenance. Right Location - Design is subjective, but proper horticulture is not. Plants although considered outside accessories are not on wheels. Selecting the right plants for the right location is crucial to a plants survival. Room to Grow - Patience has a huge monetary value when considering the right size and quantity of plants needed. Don’t be afraid to plant small and wait for it to grow. Each passing year, you’ll find the landscape only gets better and better as it continues to grow and fill in, adding value to your home. Overplanting (instant gratification) will have the opposite effect. Proper Maintenance - When deciding to landscape, plan on budgeting some money for maintaining your investment. Ask your designer/consultant up front about maintenance costs so you won’t be caught off guard next year. Proper maintenance is the main reason landscapes fail or do not last as long. Increase the value of your property by protecting your landscape investment. Property value does not only mean the resale value but can also be the environmental and quality of life values you receive when landscaping your home. If you’re in the market to sell your home in today’s tough housing market, your landscaping could be your ticket to getting someone in the door. Today most people are caught up in the “Green Scene” you couldn’t be anymore green when considering landscaping. People are spending more and more time at home so why not properly plan and create a comfortable, functional enjoyable outdoor living space. Maybe the front of your house needs an extreme makeover or just a little tune up. Fall is the greatest time of the year to get those landscaping projects in order. The temperatures are cooler, there is adequate rain and the plants will settle in faster and be ready to grow next spring. So be money smart focusing on quality over price. Be patient and phase your project to accommodate your budget. Plan ahead for maintenance and watch your investment grow. |
