Generic Spreader Settings
"What Spreader Setting do I use?" can be a difficult question to answer

Common Problems
Reliability of the settings is tied closely to spreader quality. Even if someone does a good job of developing settings for a specific sample of that spreader model, your spreader of the same model might deliver much more or much less at the same setting, but you have no way of knowing that. Another common problem is that new spreader models and granular product formulations are introduced frequently. Spreader companies and fertilizer companies do not communicate as they should. The setting on a product label might be for last year’s model of spreader. A further problem is that a few manufacturers don’t really develop good settings; they guess at settings, use obsolete settings or stretch width recommendations to make their product sound better.

What Should You Do About Settings?
In general, you should not rely on a list of settings provided with your spreader. Those settings maybe obsolete. The settings on the product bag are expected to be correct, but that is not guaranteed. As a homeowner, your best solution is to buy a reputable spreader and brand-name products, then use the settings on the product bag. Keep track of how much area the bag actually covers, and adjust your spreader, if needed, next time.

Bloomin Garden Carries Fertilome and Earthway Products
Bloomin Garden Centre proudly carries Fertilome Products. Earthway Spreaders are the preferred spreader for Fertilome Products. Fertilome and Earthway work together for spreader setting accuracy. Bloomin Garden Centre also carries Earthway Spreaders.

How to determine how much fertilizer to apply
It's important to know how to determine how much fertilizer to apply to your lawn and at what rate. This will help you from burning your lawn when you apply too much fertilizer. You can estimate the setting you will need and how much fertilizer to buy by following a few guidelines.
The appropriate rate of application for fertilizer is one pound of nitrogen for every 1,000 square feet of lawn you want to cover.
  1. Take the percent of nitrogen in your blend (the first number of the three listed in the guaranteed analysis) and divide that into 100. Let’s assume we are applying the blend 19 – 0 – 6, so 100 / 19 = 5.26 or we can round that down to 5. You can also use this number (5) to determine where to set your spreader to cover your lawn with the correct amount of fertilizer with the chart above.

  2. Take the square footage of the lawn you want to cover and divide that by the amount need to cover 1,000 square feet. Let’s use 12,000 square feet of lawn for an example. 12,000 / 1,000 = 12

  3. Now multiply the amount needed to cover 1,000 square feet (5) by the square feet of your lawn divided by 1,000 (12) to get the weight in pounds that you will need to adequately fertilize your lawn. 5 x 12 = 60
