War on Weeds!

Winning the war on weeds can be a long hard battle
or it could be a lot easier with a little maintenance.

There are weeds in your flower bed and in your lawn that may be driving you crazy because it seems to be a never ending battle to get rid of them. We have several solutions to this age old problem that will tremondously cut down on your maintenance.

1st Plan of Attack
Kill the existing weeds with a post-emergence herbicide.

There are several weed killers on the market but we have found that products distributed by Fertilome/Hy Yield tend to be some of the best.

Hy Yield Killzall - This is a non-selective liquid weed killer. The herbicide will only kill what it hits. It can safely used around desirable plants as long as you control the spray so it only hits the weeds. It doesn't have any soil activity so it can't be absorbed by the roots of the desirable plants. Killzall has a much higher concentrate of glyphosphate which is the same active ingredient as in Round-up. Because of the higher concentration you'll mix less into the water, making it much more economical than similar products like Round Up. This product tends to be more effective with higher temperatures.
Fertilome Weed Out - Weed Out is a selective broadleaved weed killer for the lawn. It will kill weeds like Dandelions, Clover, Chickweed, Wild Violets, and many more. It contains Trimec, which is a combination of three of the best broadleaved weed killers available. The Trimec combination makes Weed Out more effective than similar products. It comes in liquid form. It also is available in granular forms with or without fertilizer. The liquid is the easiest and most cost effective way to apply the Weed Out, by spraying it with a tank spayer only where you have the weeds.
Weed Free Zone - Kills over 80 of the toughest to control broadleaf weeds including clover, ground ivy, spurge, chickweed, dandelion, henbit, oxalis, poison ivy, purslane, shepherds purse, thistle, Virgiania buttonweed, wild onion and many other listed on the label. May be applied to Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye grass, Tall Fescue, Colonial Bentgrass, Common Bermuda Grass, St. Augustine and Centipede Grass. Consult label for specific application rate for each turfgrass listed. This product tends to work well with cooler temperatures.
Over the Top Grass Killer - Kills unwanted grasses in and around ornamental plants, by spraying directly over the top of 300 ground covers, evergreens, shrubs, ornamentals, vines, and flowers listed.

2nd plan of attack
Prevent new weeds from growing with a pre-emergent weed killer.

For Landscape Beds
Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper
containing Dimension

Dimension is a pre-emergent weed killer. it keeps weed seeds from germinating in your flower beds and landscape areas. Dimension is better than products with treflan (Preen) because it lasts longer. Treflan weed preventers only last a maximum of 90 days. Dimension will last 120 days. Because of Dimension's longevity you'll only need to apply it two times for a growing season. Treflan requires three applications. Treflan also has restrictions around certain plants, particularly groundcovers. Dimension can be used around anything with the exception of vegetables. Best of all it is less expensive to use.
For Lawns
Fertilome All Season Lawn Food with Weed and Crabgrass Preventer
containing Prodiamine (formerly Barricade)
This product has the pre-emergent weed killer Prodiamine. Prodiamine not only prevents crabgrass from germinating, but keeps any weed seed in the lawn from germinating. Prodiamine also continually works in the lawn for 8 months. It is impossible to put it down early. Because of its longevity it will continue to prevent weeds through the summer as the weed seeds find their way into your lawn. It is granular product you apply with a spreader. This is the only product on the market that contains Prodiamine. If you have recently put new grass seed down, wait until after this new seed has germinated.
Some Do's and Don'ts
Do not Pull Weeds! - Realize that for every weed you pull, it doesn't kill the weed, it just leaves hairlike roots that sprout into 5 or 6 more weeds from every broken root. So if you want to permanently get rid of them once and for all - you need to follow the plan of attack listed above.

Weed Barriers - There are several different types of materials produced as weed barriers. We don't use these products in our landscape projects nor do we sell these products for several different reasons. Weeds still tend to grow anyway sometimes thru the barrier or on top of the barrier. Some of these materials also hinder the natural absorption and distribution of air & water which could affect the health of your plants.

Timing of the Application - the liquid products need to be applied a good 6-8 hours prior to getting wet to ensure the chemical has time to get absorbed into the plant. The granular products can be put down anytime and water will help the product get absorbed into the soil faster.

Mulching and Weed Treatments - Depending on the weather it can sometimes take up to 7-10 days for liquid weed killers to work. You may choose to mulch the beds after spraying for weeds or you could also wait for the weeds to die before mulching to ensure they are died in case you have to respray. Put your pre-emergent product (Dimension) on top of the mulch to ensure all weed seeds (including those that may have blown into the mulch) don't grow .

Good Luck with your Battle and May the Smartest Gardeners Win!
